Coins are needed just incase the economy in that country collapses. If you have only paper bills, thats exactly what it turns into. Paper.Coins on the otherhand keep a certain value, lets say a coin is made to be 25 cents in US standards. And lets also say that the coin was made from silver which we will say is worth 20 cents. If the economy falls, the 25 cents it was first issued to be worth will be gone, but the metallic value it retains will stay. So it will still be worth 20 cents.

In the early 90s, I went to a convention here in South Australia. They had a stall from the aus mint and you could pay 5 dollars for them to make a 2 dollar coin (had a small selection) infront of you. Was pretty Interesting.

Coins... are nothing but money.

Paper tears VERY easily. Coins are meant to last. Besides, I'm a collector of coins, so I don't see coins as just "money."

coinwriter:Yeh you're right but still, whats the point of coins? We really could do without them.Wouldn't you rather have some nice foldable 1cent paper bills in your wallet than a bunch of pennies?

Only because jewelry makers jack up the price. You're paying for the jewelry not the silver. |
