While the first part of your statement is true, the second part is not. Nobody was profoundly pleased that the BB's were gone. We wouldn't have built anymore during the war if that was the case, and instead we built several.

Actually battleships were deemed inferior to aircraft carriers very early in ww2. The USN was aside from 3000 lost, profoundly pleased pearl harbor got bombed to rid the battleships.

Good reasoning; I think we got a slight crossed wire with A) "Did the Nazis use slave labour?" vs B) "Was the Bismarck built by slaves?"Answers: A, yes, B, no.

Good point, well made, you're quite right. the logic does work both ways though; the Nazis did use slave labour elsewhere, so its possible that the Bismarck was built by forced labour. I'm looking at the note from GUYfawkes above, though; on balance, I think you're right.

crazytexan1234 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
You are correct. The Bismarck was launched Feb 14, 1939

May I join this debate? If Wikipedia is to be believed, the company who built the Bismarck (Blohm & Voss) did use inmates from the Neuengamme concentration camp, from July 1944 until April 1945.Wikipedia also states that the Bismarck was launched February 14, 1939.So, if Wikipedia is to be believed, inmates were not used in the building of the Bismarck, but inmates were later employed at the German shipyards. |
