I personally think Paul Newman is trading paint with Dale Earnhardt, Neil Bonnett, Davey Allison, Alan Kulwicki, and the rest of the gang in Heaven right now.

automotive relevancy? so are all of the automakers and constructors in the American Le Mans Series tree huggers? the IRL/CART split didn't help sponsors. it was last man/woman standing. spec racing is the ruin of modern racing. auto racing is a technical sport and the more spec it is, it dumbs it down. indy should be about the car/engine/tire/etc and not just the driver. this isn't tennis.

And also: NOBODY cares about automotive relevancy in NASCAR! Toyota certainly doesn't, Ford certainly doesn't, GM certainly doesn't, and the FANS certainly don't care about it.There's more money being thrown around in NASCAR right not than there is in F1. If anyone gave a crap about automotive relevancy, this would NOT be the case.Nowadays the only people who care about automotive relevancy are the environmentalists who want to see racing advanced clean fuel technologies.

Tire wars compromise safety, the end. That's why F1 put a stop to it, that's why NASCAR put a stop to it(TWICE!!!), that's why IRL stopped it, that's why Champ Car stopped it.If find it hard to believe that FOUR major racing series abandoning the concept for the same reason could ALL be wrong.A single tire supplier can learn plenty on their own. Bridgestone claims that the end of F1's tire war has allowed them to advance their tire technology FAR faster than they were able to during the war.

boots it out the door? that is what Dodge did with the truck series. More and more execs are asking, "where is the automotive relevancy in NASCAR?" tire wars as in ALMS help technology and automobiles.
DBoy02 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I never said anything about NASCAR being good on technology(even their safety is low-tech, after all). However, this is why I like NASCAR(its far from my favorite from of racing, though - I prefer ALMS and IndyCar) - with all the super focus on technology in other forms of racing(especially ALMS and F1), its nice to see some racing that just looks at technology and boots it out the door.

NASCAR is a joke for testing technology

Its true that turn one(oval)/turn 13(F1 road course) were poorly set up, but Michelin had been racing there since 2001 without problems. As for NASCAR, its true they had issues on keeping up with safety before Big E's death, but safety concerns from the drivers and fans were amongst the complaints the ended the Goodyear/Hoosier war. Even NASCAR admitted, long before Big E's death, that the tire war was a bad idea and had a significantly negative effect on safety. |
