the setting should be in AC voltage(alternating current)because household electricity is in AC voltage and your range should be higher than 240 volts. BTW there are multimeters with auto-range functions their a lot easier to use hope this could help you.

the knob should be in ac function (im assuming your measuring your household electric connection which is AC) and the range should be greater than your desired magnitude so it should be greater than 240 volts hope this could help you.
