"Universal Soldier" was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie...a complex song. I don't think Ms. Sainte-Marie meant it as a detriment to the soliders, but to war in and of itself. If you want to hear about leaders sending us into war, listen to "Master Of War"/Dylan. He damn sure got it right back then and still does.

i really think phil was a real democrat fighting againt most republicans and there love for wars and there is another song called universal soliderkinda the oppisite of this song it says it isnt the pepole of the nation it is the soldier themselves it 's there falt. bullshit the leaders lead uys in war not the solidier and it was made by a republican who ironoic

The lyrics of this song are wonderfully well written, in so many different ways. The singer's perspective as The People or a sort of universal soldier makes this song about more than just protesting war - it describes humanity's moral growth.
