You're getting awful close to the speed of sound, at sea level. What would happen if you broke it, on the ground? I'm suspecting pain, then death....fairly quickly after.

The powerplants for Thrust SSC were Rolls Royce "Speys", the type of engine fitted to the RAF Phantom variant. I don't know if they were stock items found lying around (like its that easy!!) or from a decommissioned aircraft. And yeah, the Phantom...what a plane! Now the Germans no longer fly at airshows we dont get to see it in Britain anymore. Gutted!!

Different variants may have used different powerplants. The good ol' Phantom was in service for a loooong time. Great aircraft :o)

One of my uncles use to work on those engines in Vietnam. I thought he said that the Phantom F-4 used the J30 Pratt and Whitney Engines. Amazing speed! You'll never be late for work again.

Best video I've seen... except the one that Richard Noble and his team gave to my company for a motivational speech. I think we paid him £10k for the hour a good few years back. His talk was stunning.. Teamwork, Determination, goal setting... the internet and all that. What an achievement. The co. I now work for supplied critical elements of the control system that kept SSC on the ground. Not easy.Roll on Bloodhound SSC. |
