By request, here is the full version of the 1997 Boston Macworld expo where we see Steve Jobs for the first time since returning to work for Apple after being gone since 1985. This was a very historic time for Apple because they were almost bankrupt at the time, so Steve announces a temporary partnership with Microsoft to a very hostile crowd. Bill Gates also makes an appearance.

Microsoft couldn't have purchased apple, can you say monopoly?

yes, Apple put Microsoft on the map by helping them grow when the Apple // took off in huge numbers, then later, Apple helped MS develop Mac software which led to MS Office for the Mac, which later came to the PC. Apple helped MS get into the Internet game and now helps them with OS advancements. The only thing MS really did (actually Bill's Dad) was sign a "tricky" legal contract with IBM in 1981, that's how they became rich. But they have never done anything based on their own talents.

well, Xerox never helped or entered into a partnership with Apple. But Xerox PARC did invite Steve and some engineers to a demo for about $1 million. Apple later hired several PARC engineers once it was known Xerox corporate heads weren't interested. And no, Xerox PARC didn't invent the GUI, (that came from SRI) they merely refined some of the early ideas, then Apple perfected it and now the Mac GUI is what everyone uses today.

no, that's absurd, NOBODY ever thought that. Apple was quite strong at the time, the problem was their new Copland OS was delayed so sales of Macs were slow as well. Steve Jobs came back and fixed all that, but NOBODY ever considered MS buying Apple, antitrust alone would never allow for such an idea to even be considered.
