I wouldn't say a lot better, but the 1939 version was heavily influenced on the 1996 film.

Is it wrong to like both? It's a beautiful story--this version is heart-wrenching wonderful. Sure the Disney version has been numbed down, but to be honest, you don't see dark themes like that in Disney movies now. I think they're both fantastic movies.

I saw about the first 10 minutes then i had to leave, but those first couple of minutes were amazing!

I thought the cartoon was a total travesty of the story. Although no movie maker has ever made the story with the original ending of the book, too downbeat I guess. My favorite scenes is where the posit Esmerelda's unselfish prayer contraposed to the selfish prayers of the congregants, but she's the evil pagan. Later when Quasimodo is caring for her and is trying to hide his face. Charles Laughton seemed to have studied how people who are partially deaf sound when they talk.

your right. for simple minds that can't truly appreciate art, stick to cartoons.

Some EU countries spell it that way.
