there were 200 candidates for it only 156 made it through selection only 76 made it as trainees and 14 died in trianing and only 33 made it through argumentation

technicaly he is the last spartan that the unsc knows is alive if you read the books they state several times that officially spartans cant die because they are symbolic to the human speciecs and the marines all spartans are listed as MIA and there are 2 spartan 2s that acctually are MIA and danteh is talking about the belive ad where they talk about master chief arming a plasma grenade and supposidly killing himself so the covenant didnt get there hands on his technology

there where 200 something spartans all but one failed master cheif not master cheifs cuz 200 zomething of them master cheif is conveinet technogly though robotic and sheild are anyways
