This is from his later stuff, when he was really less focused on laughs, he was getting deeper and deeper into legal trouble, and he talked a lot about it.

i wont give up on him just yet, some dam fine comics loved the guy so there must be something to him.... seems very bitter in this clip tho, a little self-indulgent.. audience laughed 4 times maybe...

remember the era this came out of, though. This is old, and naturally will take time to get used to.

My first LB video on youtube, what a disappointment.. Simply not funny..

Half the point of watching comedians like George Carlin and Lenny Bruce is inspiration and relating to what they're saying rather than just laughing at jokes about how long it takes to make baked potatoes.

You're an idiot.

Should he just have stayed a funny guy? I think it was heroic that he fought for his rights. Not just his but ours!!!!Fighting for one's rights isn't always scripted.

I have 2 of his comedy albums. When he did scripted bits, he was funny, even biting. BUt towards the end he was obsessed with his legal defense. Lenny mistakenly thought that the public would pay to hear him rant and rave about his private torment at the hands of the DA. Just because something is True does not mean it's funny. People will pay to hear social criticism if it's funny. If not, then it's just a crusading professor or preacher.

What throws some folks off is Lenny's fast talking coupled with his New York accent. What's important to remember is that Lenny was a brilliant social critic. He was so effective that at some of his criminal trials Catholic priests testified on his behalf as they felt that Lenny enlightened people to hypocrisy in all facets of life. This video clip is far from the best example of his work and not a good introduction to Lenny Bruce. Check out "Mask Man" if you want a big laugh:) |
