Natural selection works at the cellular level too. An example is that scientists know that the mitochondria in human cells was at one point a separate organism that eventually morphed into cells and those cells flourished while others languished so the cells with mitochondria passed on their traits through cell 'generations'. It's all out there.

Don't look at it in terms of what they are now, but the tiny advantages given to them every generation (evolution is random, no intelligence is involved). The components have become specialized due to millions of years of mutations. Ideas like this are tricky to explain in few words, one should really read into it on their own. That's why the Bible is so appealing. People want it to be easy to understand. They're too lazy to learn for themselves. Read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins
