My first video on economics. I describe what the carbon tax is and refer to N. Gregory Mankiw's blog for further readings on the topic.

If taxes are the anwswer they will have to raised humongously to make a difference which will create other problems - poverty -collapse of tourism - ruined economy - way before alternatives are made -think about it. There are other answers to the carbon problem other than taxes, but of course governments don't have the guts to implememnt them, they can work with private enterprise to produce electric cars for one, but their lost revenue from gas taxes won't allow them to. They LOVE taxing us!

a) Horses are the ultimate in "carbon-based transportation" unless you think they've engineered a horse that doesn't eat or shit. b) the U.S. lacks the appropriate infrastructure to convert to electric vehicles. c) the private market supplies most of these goods. A carbon tax could help promote the propagation of this technology.

Governments care less about the environment or anything else that dosn't feed their own agenda's. We have the technology right now to mass produce electric cars why aren't they using the unlimited tax resources they have right now to make them? They would lose money thats all - its all bout the money for them.As I horse and buggy lover I would be the first to go back to those times and get rid of all the carbon based transportation, but it will never happen, taxes certainly won't.

Gasoline produces pollution with a social cost not captured by its price. A carbon tax, optimally, would be the difference. A higher net price of fuel would encourage the development of alternatives by making more expensive technologies more price competitive, and the government could earmark those tax revenues for investment into alternative energies.

Sorry but that kind of change will never happen - its far too late - what we need is an alternative to using carbon - not another tax.

One of the reasons bike riding is dangerous is that decades of gasoline priced less than its goods cost plus its social cost has contributed to the type of urban sprawl which promotes an automobile culture. A substantive carbon tax will help change the shape of urban planning and make bicycling a much more practical and safe alternative.

riding bikes is very dangerous and not everybody is able to, nor does it get you anywhere fast, transit is good where it exits I use it to - but is limited - people will never give up their cars - the carbon tax is simple government theft and an excuse to steal more of our money - and name calling is a lower thing that I won't stupe down to.

oh for god sakes... the carbon tax is so people should be riding bikes instead of driving cars and people should take more transit u dingwad

I just can't believe those people who actually support this carbon tax, it will do no more good than empty our pockets more than they already are - the rich will continue to drive their cars and boats and fly, the poor will only get poorer and colder in the winter. We need alternatives to using carbon based fuels - not more theft of our money by governements who really care less about the wellness of the world we live in.
