Sorry minor7b. That wasn't intended as an insult. That was directed toward commenters like insaneoffoe who seem to prefer more mainstream kind of music. I just wanted to point out that to the experienced ear, bebop is not random.

I know what bebop is; I've been playing it for 40 yrs.I merely expressed an opinion & you characterize me as a swing or pop fan. The expression "common folks" doesn't sit too well with people either.Reasonable people can disagree, & they shouldn't be insulted when they do:)

It's bebop. It's not for swing or pop fans. They break out of the cliches and common forms. They are cooking up some tamales that are too hot for common folks...more for the acclimated palette of musicians. Ariba!

I get what you're saying, but as far as form and things go they are spot on. It's just very out. I understand if that's not your thing though.

I'm not questioning the skill & speed of the musicians, but in my opinion, as a musician who has done this tune many times, it was not meant to be played at such a breakneck tempo. If they played, i.e. "'round midnight" at this tempo, it would defeat the melodic elements of the tune. The same holds true here.Look at the music & you'll see what I mean.I've heard Miles do this tune at much slower tempos & it sounded much better.

Where exactly do the fuck up?
insaneoffoe (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
seriously, this might be skillfully played and all, but it just sounds like a bunch of instruments randomly put together at a ridiculous speed rather than a song.

This is a great tune written by Richard Carpenter (of all people), but they fuck it up by playing it too damn fast.
