Cecilia Bartoli sings Casta Diva (Maria Malibran tribute)

This GORGEOUS version of Casta Diva is from Cecilia's upcoming new album "Maria" (no, not Callas...Malibran) tribute to the biggest diva of the 19th century. Not since Montserrat Caballe has someone sang more beautiful pianissimo high B flats. Haters, keep it to a minimum...Remember, this song is meant to be a solemn prayer to the moon, not a screamo fest *cough*Callas*cough*.The key is in Malibran's version (F) instead of the original (G), but hey...very few sopranos sang it in G, certainly Montserrat and Callas never did.

Her Rossini coloratura is more shotgun, but her Mozart coloratura is VERY legatto.

Oh believe me, no one is gonna be asking her to sing Norma, but this is a recital tribute to La Malibran, just that...she is not trying to be the new Norma.

The question is not power, irm dfinetely not fond in screaming or loud singing. But this here is a studio version for microphone only, these sounds may be beautiful, but will not be heard on stage. An experiment not opera singing. A singer (on stage) is to be heard, in ALL parts I have seen her, she was definitely not (exept in recital). I love her in Baroque repertoire, but NOT in Mozart or belcanto. She's a fine singer and musician, but even she can't sing everything. And Norma she can not.

That's what Bellini wrote... ppp sotto voce, plus the delicate sound of the period instruments...one cannot be belting out. It's like modern tenors singing strained and forceful high C's as Elvino when it is written ppp molto dolce.

Too pianissimo!!! Not a GREAT Casta Diva.

Well, back in the day voices were trained to sing beautifully, not loudly, and carry as far they could. Now it seems is more important to sing loudly than beautifully for some people.

well for Mozart (having seen her Don Giovanni in Zurich I can say, her voice is NOT big enough. She was fighting all the time (and lost).

sorry, but Marco Callas is right. Her coloratura (in Rossini) is spectacular, sure, but bizarre and without legato. Nothing to do with the coloratura itself, there were and are so many sigers who can do it WITH legato (Horne, Valentini-Terrani, Podles, Blythe...). He did't talk about loudness, but about a supported voice, here in this studio recording it's defintely not (probably to create some sort of effect). IHMO very bad taste and out of style. All in all a studio experiment.
