It would be nice to see more relief pitchers, particularly closers, who were more similar to Goose Gossage. Unfortunately, I don't see anybody in that role who can pitch roughly two-to-three innings in relief on a consistent basis.

The Goose is a class act. Not much more to say beyond that, and that he was a true workhorse relief pitcher and an intense competitor.

Your grandfather is part of the classy old days of the sport. Even though he managed against the Yankees, he was well respected and I recall him being one of the best at strategy.

Overall the group of players who become eligible next year is pretty weak, with only Rickey Henderson a shoe-in. Matt Williams had a nice career for a 3rd baseman, but his .268 average won't help his case. Mo Vaughn might have had a chance had injuries not cut his career short; he did win an MVP award in '95. So, if it's only Henderson among the new eligible players, maybe next year Jim Rice finally gets in.

Goose would come in the 7th with bases loaded o outs and throw nothing but heat. No cutter, no curveball, no change-up, strictly gas. He pitched more innings in a game than starters do in some games today. He also pitched 5-6 days in a row, never needed a rest, always ready. Today he would get 10 mil a year from anybody...

If you didn't see Goose Gossage stroll in from the bullpen (in the late 70s, early 80s) and shutdown...., scratch that, ...OBLITERATE the competition, ...then you have no idea what the word 'domination' means, when it comes to baseball.
