If it were pure gambling yes, you are gonna go broke. All pit, sports, lotto is -EV or expected value. I'm talking only the game of poker. If it is pure luck how does Phil Hellmuth consistantly win tournaments. Is he blessed with amazing luck or does he study the math, study psychology. Its Different than drugs. If you only chase money yeah you are gambling, if you play disciplined you can profit. Few people possess the right attributes but it is doable

alcohol causes more deaths fights divorces car accidents and does nothing good for society. Gambling can be fun if your responsible. Alcohol should be illegal not gambling.

I will agree that gambling such as anything else if overdone is hazardous. Poker itself is a little different than games of pure chance such as slots, lotto, etc. A very good book that kind of shows both sides of the coin is Barry Greenstein's "Ace on the River" It is impossible to really have people who make a living playing craps, however there are some who do consistantly well in poker due to the skill element. Some of the skills required are patience, psychology, mathmatics, control.

The GAME of poker is about cash (real money), otherwise you don't feel satisfied when you win those lovely chips, they have to have a certain value. I suggest you grab some cash and play for real money, you will certainly enjoy it!

it can be a bad thing for a problematic gambler. i can think of many things that are fun and also have a negative affect on one's life.i too enjoy the game of poker, so i play it because of the actual GAME, but do not feel compelled to play with real money.why SHOULD everyone try it, when it puts countless people at risk of experiencing devastating ramifications??

that's like saying to an alcoholic, learn to drink the "right way" and you wont have a problem.if gambling is the choice of an addicts form of avoidance, then it's problematic for that person.not everyone is the same

What's the rule? - of coolIn observation of life using as much clarity as possible - I notice that gamblers are constantly, intermitendtly, randomly, and consistently being reminded what it feels like to be a loser, be surrounded by losers, and see what losers look like. That's gambling! You can jump around and thinking you won $6000, chances are you bet $8000 and lost all the productive time you could have otherwise achieved in your life. Does anyone want to bet I am wrong?
