For a higher resolution video of this please click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... scientist Stephen Hawking is going to unveil a remarkable clock that has no hands and shows time with the help of light. Known as the Corpus Clock, the machine has been invented by and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building. The Clock will be unveiled on 19th September by Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time. Dr Taylor, an inventor and horologist, has put 500,000 pounds of his own money and seven years into developing the clock, which has been inspired from a design by a clock made by the legendary John Harrison, the pioneer of longitude.Of John Harrison's many innovations, he came up with the 'grasshopper escapement, explained Dr Taylor, referring to the device used by Harrison to turn rotational motion into a pendulum motion for timekeeping. No one knows how a grasshopper escapement works, so I decided to turn the clock inside out and, instead of making the escapement 35 mm across, it is 1.5 m across, he said. He calls the new version of the escapement a Chronophage (time-eater) a fearsome beast which drives the clock, literally eating away time. For more information please log on to http://www.corpusclock.co.uk

wtfi don't get it. a gold clock with an ugly thing on top, that manages to slow dont once an hour and stay on time? i'd like this more if it didn't have the thing on top and especially if it wasn't being billed as some big scientific thing. whats so sceintific about this?
xen0bia (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Wow, absolutely genious!

Brilliant -old world meets LED new world. Simply fascinating. Can I buy a smaller one for my home?

What a fantastically beautiful device for showing time bot literally and metaphorically. The most impressive aspect of it is that it is mechanical!Cheers to the inventor.

I am in total agreement with you fellow christian. I find the creature very frightening.

Totally evil! I wonder who funded this thing!!! I'm not sure that this any more engineering than art. That chain clanging into the "coffin" is eerie, too!
Byohaszard (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Amazing, utterly amazing. The invention, the mechanics, the artistry, and the message- everything about this is great! This truly is a work of art :)
Byohaszard (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Wow!Instead of viewing this as an amazing work of art, or a message of what a slave humanity is to time, you decide to take it the bible-thumping way and totally disregard its beauty and genious. You scream blasphemy! Typical. Stop looking for "subliminal messages" in great inventions and open your eyes. You dont need to scrutinize works of art- Satan is around us blatently. Hes not hiding in a clock. Its people like you who turn people AGAINST God.Oh, and by the way, I'm a Christian too.
