Agreed. By tension, I mean to imply negative tension.

Having zero tension when you are singing is not possible, you cannot sing without some sort of tension. It's important that the tension is coming from the right place, but certain muscles need to tighten. Masters of singing utilize the correct muscles and sing with the least amount of effort with the most forward, open sounding singing. Di Stefano is not the greatest, but he is a brilliant talent. He was not a technician, he was an artist.

See, the key is understanding that there is no such thing as passagio only tension, and the masters are simply the tensionless. If you dont place the voice forward enough i.e. in the mask, you allow for too many muscles to be activated down below, especialy the big nono's, the tongue and muscles surrounding the neck. It is quite easy to distinguish a throaty sound from a free, more forward placed sound. It takes a little practice but you should try it. Example of perfect technique is Kraus.

It is true that he didn't utilize the passaggio correctly, but really...who cares? The quality and timbre of his voice is stunning and he's an awesome performer. I'm moved when I listen to him and I wish I could've seen him in person.

See, its all great and all, and he IS amazing...but to my ear, its all in the throat... Kraus/ Bergonzi is far superior in my opinion. (Technique wise.)PS: Please dont flame me! lol
