Yeah... so we put the second most destructive force on this planet in the one part of the planet that has sanctuary from it? I think humans have a little more way to come before we're aloud to lead our footprints there. As for why colonies off this planet and not in ocean? Because the oceans won't protect us from astronomical threats. At least if we have some sort of outpost off this earth we have increased odd of survival. Oceans yes, but not yet. Spare them.

I've been a Bob Ballard fan since he found the Titanic on my 14th birthday. I have an autographed pic of him (the same one on the article on him on Wikipedia) on my wall. Whenever I see it, I salute it.

I agree. :)Ofc we should explore the oceans but the way we're ruining our planet atm. we're going to need other planets to run to at some point. I think we should do way more to explore space than we're doing now actually. :)

Its great what hes doing and I agree that it should be done and is very interesting but I still think space exploration is cooler and has more potential.

I agree in most with what Ballard is saying but his final question, why not colonize the sea(floor), well there are a few fundamental reasons why we cannot, pressure being the main reason. We can compensate with technology for the lack of air pressure in the upper atmosphere and in the space between planets and moons, but the pressure at the bottom of the deep sea looks to be an insurmountable obstacle to living in the dark wet desert. Water is heavy. Very heavy.
