We visited Meka's whimsical cob cottage in southern Oregon in September 2006. Cob is a mixture of earth, sand and straw. www.cobprojects.info Contact info for Meka: Michael "Meka" Bunchmeka@kleiwerks.orgwww.kle werks.org80 Buchanan Ave.Asheville, NC 28801

OK - this is officially my new house. Thank you - where are the keys?

how beautiful. I can't imagine how much work and time went into this. I don't think I'd be able to do it... maybe one day I'll build a cob oven or a small meditation house... maybe :) .

Great name!

It will melt in heavy rain--after a hundred years or so! The cobbing process basically creates sedmintary stone. The clay and sand form a chemical/mechanical bond and the straw hold it all together. But the real answer to your question is: a good roof and possibly a stone facing along the bottom to deflect any backsplash.

Actually, we were just visiting. The wonderful fellow who designed and built it is Meka and his contact info is listed next to the video somewhere. He's an incredible person!

With strawbale the niche has to be cut out of the straw. It can be done with an electric carving knife (I bought one at a garage sale for a buck)or some people use a grinder. It's not too hard, as long as the bales aren't stacked so the strings face vertical. You don't want to cut the strings.
