As a student of the history of South Africa that admittedly does not understand this language, I am still impressed to hear the voice of a man so influential in history, so long past. This was the man that led the Boers to a small victory well over 100 years ago at Modderfontein. Thank you for posting this.

yes, its Afrikaans. He spoke 'Malmesbury Afrikaans', a type of dialect. It is common in the Riebeeck-West region where he was born. This dialect is characterised by an uvular trill (similar to the French usage in fact). I think that is why its sounds like Afrikaans with a Dutch accent.

Is this Dutch or Afrikaans? I know this isn't Dutch, but it sounds different from the afrikaans accent of today. I know he studied Dutch in school and that it was still spoken in ZA during his days. It seems like Afrikaans being spoken with a more Dutch accent than usual.
