the buoyancy effect is actually not that important, since it is countered by inflow from sides.What is the critical point is the strong gas outflow from the center, which may tilt the vessel located a little off-center.

I heard that gas erupted to the surface along a fault which outcropped at the seabed some distance from the rig. This eventually excavated a huge hole which worked its way to the rig location. THe danger with gas in the water is that, apart from being flammable, it reduces the bouyancy of the water.

That looks like BOP failure to me, maybe not latched properly? You can clearly see the riser in one shot they must have disconnected the LMRP and hauled ass out of there with the anchors. The rig would sink in the aerated water
