After being rescued by local watermen — who resembled a cross between modern day taxi drivers and gondola oarsmen -- Doggett was grateful enough to offer compensation in the form of a racing wager to the six fastest of these boaters. The race spanned from a pub on the London Bridge to a pub in Chelsea -- a little over five and a half miles, and was to be rowed AGAINST the tide. Doggett presided over the race from its first manifestation in 1715 until his death in 1721. Though Doggett's Coat and Badge race still continues today, there have been some notable changes. The race is no longer played against the tide, and the prize money has increased from a mere coat and some pieces of silver to almost five hundred dollars for the winner. Still, only six young watermen can compete to represent their respective teams. To date, the fastest race was in 1973 when Bobby Prescott sped to the finish in only 23 minutes 22 seconds. The most recent race however, was held on July 16th 2007 and won by a Judy McGrane, proving that times are indeed a changin' with a woman winning the waterman's sport! Spend some years haze grey and underway and that attitude may change. I'm happy to spend most of my time attached to the ground in any manner. | |
