you're partly correct- when he was a teenager he got into a fight over a girl with his friend george underwood. young dave was punched in the face and was caught in the eye either by Underwood's knuckle or ring, stories vary. due to the damage his left pupil is permanently dilated (Anisocoria). however they are still the same colour, the enlarged pupil just sometimes gives the illusion of different colours.

He does have different colored eyes due to a fight he had when he was a lad- at least thats what I understand.
