I'm a very recently reformed smoker, (quit 8 months ago) and it was fear of disability, and not death that motivated me to quit. I suspect that most people who have to rely an electrolarynx to speak, avoid going out in public because of a stigma that I'm sure you are well aware of. You're doing a very admirable thing, standing virtually alone against an inundation of glamorous images of smoking. You're the star of one of the smartest tobacco awareness psa's I've ever seen.

Theyre just normal people.Why would they scare you? Like TJC said, Youve probably never met a laryngectomee. I have, Theyre just as normal as anyone else, just with an altered voice. Such as me, I have scoliosis and continue to this day to lean to one side, I dont feel appreciated when people call me "scary."

There's a certain personality type that will always like the idea of smoking and being a smoker. These types are not easily dissuaded.

The surgery is called a "LARYNGECTOMY". Its the removal of the cancerous larynx. The "hole" is called a STOMA. Once the larynx is removed, a new air-way is needed, because removing the larynx cuts of the air-way from the mouth and nose. NOTE: The vocal-cords are in the larynx. they get holes in their neck because they cant breathe normally anymore. often due to mouth or esophageal cancer. The hole lets them breathe through their neck.

Love this ad! It's hilarious, yet it makes a very good point that almost all smokers find out sooner or later. My dad smoked for almost 70 years, and even though he quit about a year ago, he has emphysema which makes it very difficult for him to breathe. I am convinced that if he hadn't smoked he would be much healthier. I've seen 90 and 100 year old people that were healthier than he is, and they didn't smoke.
