the mugger shows contempt for the safety of his victim...contempt=hatea hitman likewise.a misdemeanor is NOT a crime, or it would be called one! in my country misdemeanors are NOT listed within the CRIMES act. so you know better than them?

An example would be a man that mugs someone because he has no money and needs to eat. Another example would be a hitman, they just do it for the money.A misdemeanor IS a crime, just not a serious one.

riiiiight...care to cite an example of that? perhaps from personal experience LOL?no, speeding is a misdemeanor

Nonsense, a person could easily kill or rob a person without bearing them any personal ill will. Hell, speeding is a crime, but I've never done it out of hate.

The first question is not being fair to the people of Tennesse. The nature of the question subtly implies that they might allow their personal political beliefs to hinder justice. You do them a great disservice. I personally don't think political views should be considered for the basis of defining a hate crime unless it explicitly includes one of the current indicators of such a classification (race, religion, sexual orientation, and so forth). You could argue a case for terrorism here, tho

I still can't understand why punishment for a "hate crime" should be harsher than for crime against an individual. Seems a bit too "1984" morphing into "thought crime" Hate isn't illegal. I don't think it's a good idea to start creating "groups" that were supposedly injured due to an attack on a member of supposed group. I also don't think that punishment for killing a police officer should carry a harsher sentence than killing a civilian. I think it's a very slippery slope.

pretty much all crimes are hate crimes so the premise itself is flawed to begin with.the only crime i can think of that isn't is assisted suicide. the rest involve an element of contempt. so the term itself is tautological. |
