I remember this! I worked at a Target store in Newark, CA and they too have a escalator for shopping carts. It's called a Vermaport and it's from Germany. I remember seeing the Vermaport shutting down a lot of times because the shoppers left something hanging on the handlebar or on the bottom of the cart.
